God and Our Ability to Create

I think about God and creativity a lot. A lot a lot. Like, from the moment I realized the two were not mutually exclusive but knitted to each other like my fifth grade home-ec project (which was pretty impressive), I’ve been thinking about this.

Because it’s amazing.

Let’s just talk about the groundwork behind this idea, shall we?

God creates. The Bible says the Earth exists because God said so. Literally, that’s exactly what happens: Genesis 1:1-15. God said “Let it be,” and it is, with very little fuss about it.

But then it goes on.

God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.

And there you go: the first time the Bible goes to specific lengths to point out that GOD MAKES STUFF. Read the rest of Genesis 1 and you’ll see the same thing again. He gives us not only the knowledge of the existence of things like the sun and the stars, but also the process that goes behind making these things.

Why does the Bible do this? Did God need to go through the process of making the stars? Well if we’re going off the idea that God is omniscient and infallible (i.e. He does what He wants because He’s God), I’m gonna say “No.”

The Bible tells us about these things because God is leading by example. It’s the same reason it tells us He rested on the seventh day: He doesn’t need to rest, but He does to give us an example of how we should behave.

So God creates. Good for Him. What does this have to do with us?

Well there’s a little thing about God creating us in His image.

So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
    male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:27

So if we’re made in His image then guess what we are hard-wired to do?

We’re hard-wired to create. To tinker. To make. To form. TO DO ALL THE COOL STUFF PEOPLE DO WHEN THEY MAKE A THING.

Sorry. I’ll calm down about it.

So there ya go. God creates, therefore we create.
